Poundbury, Dorset – Yarlington Housing
This 63-apartment Extra Care scheme is located on a prominent site fronting the Great Field at Poundbury in Dorset.
NOMA worked in collaboration with Yarlington Housing Group and the Duchy of Cornwall’s executive architects to produce a design that balances the functional needs of Extra Care accommodation with the traditional standards that are required by the Duchy. The building contains a mixture of one and two-bedroom apartments together with communal facilities.
The scheme was constructed by Galliford Try Partnerships using modern construction methods to achieve a traditional building form. A lightweight steel frame with integral insulation panels was manufactured off-site by Atkin Trade, allowing the main frame to be erected quickly. The building work was carried out in three phases to facilitate construction on a fairly tight site, allowing the brickwork to progress in tandem with the steel frame erection in order to make the sections of the building watertight within the shortest possible timeframe. The building won an FIS Gold Award for the steel frame construction.
